Busy Cobb County intersection will be closed all weekend

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Traffic at one of Cobb County’s busiest overpasses is about to change forever.

The Windy Hill interchange at Interstate 75 closed Friday night and will remain closed through the weekend.

It will reopen Monday morning as the county’s first diverging diamond interchange.

David Baggett with the Cobb County Department of Transportation walked Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach through the changes.

"Understand there's going to be a change in traffic flow. Please pay attention to the signage. Take a little time to get used to it," he said.

Channel 2's Nicole Carr spoke to frustrated drivers trying to navigate the area Friday night.

"This is ridiculous. What is happening right now," one driver said.

The change is designed to speed things up and make things safer.

"It removed a conflict point from making a left turn in front of traffic and prevents you from having to park and cue up on the bridge," Baggett said.

Once complete, Windy Hill will look similar to the interchange at Ashford-Dunwoody and I-285.

Drivers are urged to pay attention to light and signs while driving through the area this weekend.

DOT officials said come Monday morning, drivers may feel like they are on the wrong side of the road, but there will be law enforcement, along with signs to help direct drivers when the bridge re-opens.

There will be a second weekend closure March 4th and 5th to pave and striped the new interchange.
