Close call after bullets blast through family's home

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County father says a stray bullet, which sailed through his home in the middle of the night, could have seriously hurt or killed a member of his family.

Jeremy Diers showed Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh the street signs just behind his Auburn home in Gwinnett County that has multiple bullet holes in them.

Diers said he will never forget the sound of the bullet blasting through his walls.

"Some kind of explosion and it ripped through the house. It came through the back of the house," Diers said.

That explosion startled Diers and his family out of bed. A few minutes later, he discovered three holes where a bullet blasted through his bedroom.

"It could have hit somebody, could have hurt them pretty badly, or even killed someone," he said.

Diers said it happened last Tuesday in his subdivision off Clack Road. The next day, he dug what was left of the bullet out of the front of the home. But he said it came from the back.

Aside from the shot up street signs, Kavanaugh spotted what appeared to be a bullet hole in a tree, just feet from the family's back door.

"Even when they're shooting a gun just for fun, it can have consequences," Diers said.

Diers hopes whoever was shooting the streets signs considers those consequences before pulling the trigger in the middle of a neighborhood.

He said his children are having a hard time sleeping at night so he tries to comfort them.

“Everybody is safe. Everybody is sound. So, God was protecting us at that time," Diers said.

Diers reported the gun shots to the Gwinnett County police.
