Police say Channel 2 photographer helped find missing baby

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Two children have been found safe after they were taken in a stolen car.

Clayton County police said a 2009 black Chevy Equinox was taken from the Quik Trip on Riverdale Road around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said there were two children, a 4-year-old and a 1-month-old, in the car when the mother left the vehicle running and went inside.

Police said someone jumped in the car and took off.

The 4-year-old girl was dropped off on the side of the road shortly after, police said. The 1-month-old girl, Ava, was still in the car.

Police said the car was seen heading east on I-285.

Police said a Channel 2 Action News photographer told them about an object he saw in the roadway on his way to the scene to cover the story.

Channel 2's Brian Ferguson took them to the area on South Fulton Parkway, and that's where Ava was found.

"She was in her car seat and it was very cold. She was outside on the side of the road," mother Precious Wilmer said.

She said she is grateful to Ferguson for his help in finding her child.

"I haven't seen him, but I'm going to thank him so much," she said.

Both children appeared to be unharmed, but were taken to a hospital to be checked out. Wilmer said they are in good condition.

Police said the car was later found abandoned along Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta.

Detectives are still searching for the person who stole the car.
