More than 130 pets need to find homes by Friday

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A local animal shelter has less than 48 hours to clear out and find homes for dozens of pets.

Clayton County’s Animal Services Center is having to move, and as a result, all of its animals need to be adopted by the end of business on Friday.

They are adopting out many animals, but the center is mostly working on finding homes for what’s left, since they mostly have pit bulls.

Channel 2’s Wendy Corona visited the center, which is in the process of moving everything out for a scheduled deep cleaning.

Samantha Knipper and her son, Ezra, drove to The Clayton County Animal Services Center from Butts County, which was more than an hour away.

“We just wanted to come by and look to see. Maybe, we could help to save an animal's life,” Knipper said.

Knipper learned about the center needing to move all its animals out through Facebook and thought it was a good time to get a pet.

”I got a small dog. I want another and that's why I came down here,” resident Bennier Brown said.

But both families went home empty-handed as there were no small breed dogs or cats at the time.

For the past week, the county has been working to move more than 130 animals from its facility.

“It smells in there, it doesn't look good in there,” Knipper said.

The county is waiving adoption fees and even allowing people to reclaim their impounded dogs at no cost.

All of the animals and furniture must be moved out of the building on Government Circle by close of business Friday.

Some have moved to the new adoption center - others have gone to rescues. But for those people who left empty-handed, they also left worried for the animals left behind.

“It's gonna be kind of hard for the big dogs, especially the pit bulls,” Brown said.

Clayton County officials would not answer any questions or go on camera. They only referred Corona to their Twitter account, which did make a plea to the public for help.
