Groups rescue dozens of cats from home in suspected hoarding case

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Two local animal rescue groups have an urgent plea for help to find new homes for dozens of cats.

Rescuers said the cats were removed from a Clayton County home in a suspected hoarding case.

The CEO of Fur Kids, which runs Georgia's largest animal rescue and no-kill shelters, said her group took possession of 18 of the cats from the Clayton County animal shelter.

"We understand there are over 30 cats in the homes and we've stepped up to take the first grouping that came in," Samantha Shelton said.

The cats are now at the Fur Kids facility in Doraville.

"They're shy right now. They're a little traumatized. They've been through a lot over the last 24 hours," Shelton said. "We're confident that we're going to get them out of their shell, get them fully vetted and prepared for adoption over the next two weeks."

Another rescue group, Friends of Clayton County Cats, said it took more than a dozen of the cats.

Both groups are working feverishly to find new homes for the cats. Channel 2 Action News contacted the Clayton County Animal Shelter for information about the case, but they did not respond. A recent post on their Facebook page issued an urgent plea for people to adopt cats and dogs that are in danger of being euthanized.

"We really need the community to step up. It's a great time to adopt. Please support adoption because otherwise, these animals are going to be euthanized in animal control," Shelton said.

Rescuers said this is an important reminder to have pets spayed and neutered.
