GBI: Clayton County police shoot 13-year-old suspect

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A 13-year-old boy was shot by Clayton County police Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened at Bonanza Church Road off Panhandle Road sometime before 2:30 p.m. Police said several people were burglarizing a home in the area but were disrupted by officers and scattered.

Clayton County Police Chief Greg Porter said the suspect pointed a weapon at the officer before the shooting. Neighbor Doug Hendrix said he heard the boy had a BB gun.

"I heard him say, 'Get on the ground. Get on the ground.' He said it as loud as day. And shortly after, I heard a shot," neighbor Dorothea Jordan told Channel 2's Tom Jones.

The officer shot one of the suspects in the head, but police wouldn't discuss his condition. Neighbors said they think he survived.

"He was still alive when they took him away," Jordan said.

Officers wouldn't say whether the other burglary suspects were captured but they were still canvassing the area when Jones was at the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
