Masked gunmen wreak havoc inside popular Waffle House

ATHENS, Ga. — Athens-Clarke County police are trying to identify two men who robbed customers and employees at a Waffle House not far from the University of Georgia campus.

Investigators said two men wearing masks entered the Waffle House at 1310 Oconee Street around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Surveillance photos obtained by Channel 2 Action News showed the men ordering the victims to the ground.

Police said they then stole cash from the register and stole the wallets and cell phones of the victims.

One of the victims was a 15-year-old girl.

"This happening this close to my house, what's to say they didn't run to my neighborhood and try to come down there and rob somebody or get a car," said neighbor and frequent Waffle House customer Brandon Rehberg.

Surveillance pictures released by Athens-Clarke County police show what appears to be a black, 4-door sedan as the getaway vehicle.

No one was injured.

Neighbors told Channel 2 Action News they've never had an issue with crime in the area before, but this incident has them on edge.

"I have to live in this area and this happening this close to home is making me nervous to have my kids out playing during the day. Now there's no telling what could happen," Rehberg said.
