Victim in random attack outside club 'fighting for his life'

ATLANTA — A man visiting Atlanta from California was beaten in an apparent random attack early Saturday morning, according to Atlanta Police.

The victim, Mark Calub, was leaving a nightclub on the 500 block of Edgewood Avenue with two friends when they were attacked by a group of up to four men, according to a police report.

Responding officers found Calub bleeding from the head and transported him to a hospital.

"He is fighting for his life," said Major Adam Lee III, with the Atlanta Police Department. "He is in very, very critical condition."

The other two victims are expected to recover.

"Unfortunately, he was attacked for no apparent reason," said Lee III who told Channel 2's Matt Johnson. "It doesn't appear to be robbery, or anything such as that. These individuals need to be brought to justice."

Police released video Thursday evening of three men wanted in connection with the attack. They are seen in the footage getting into a dark-colored Nissan Armada SUV.

Calub's family flew in from California after the attack and in a statement provided only to Channel 2 Action News, the family said:

"Mark was visiting a friend in Atlanta for the first time, and out of nowhere he and his friends were attacked as they walked down the street. What was supposed to be an enjoyable and memorable trip turned into a nightmare, and Mark is now in critical condition far away from home. Mark is a well-loved brother, son and friend to so many, and we are beyond devastated by this tragedy. Please help us spread the news so that those responsible are brought to justice so they can't hurt others like Mark again. We're so heartbroken that anyone would do this to him. He is always full of life and an awesome person to be around. If anyone knows anything about this attack, please contact the Atlanta Police Department. It would also mean a lot to us as well if you would please respect my family's privacy in the meantime as we go through this difficult time."
