Burglary suspect dies in police custody

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Clayton County police are staying mum about what led up to the death of a burglary suspect in their custody.

Police said the man, whom they haven't identified, fought with officers as they tried to subdue him. Two officers had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Channel 2’s Tom Jones was in court Friday when another man implicated in the home burglary on Georgetown Circle faced a judge. Jerome Jeffy, 34, faces burglary and obstruction charges. The judge set bond for him at $10,000.
Officers said it was Thursday when Jeffy and an accomplice went to the home around 11 a.m. and broke in through a glass sliding door. Police said they were in the process of stealing televisions, a laptop and jewelry when officers arrived. Officers said Jeffy hid in a closet and had to be forcefully removed.
They said the second suspect began fighting with the officers. A neighbor said he saw police bring out the bloodied suspect. The GBI confirmed officers used a Taser on the suspect.

"What I understand is the police guy say the guy was Tased. Even two of the police guys got injured," Duke Nwaopara said.
Two officers and the suspect were taken to the hospital. Police said the suspect later died.
A police representative said the cause of death is unknown and the GBI is investigating the incident. A GBI spokesman said his agency is not investigating and will only perform the autopsy.
Clayton County police would not answer any questions about how the man died or the amount of force used to subdue him. The owner of the home had no comment.
