Boy, 12, in critical condition after shooting

ATLANTA — Atlanta police say a man surrendered to police after accidentally shooting a 12-year-old boy in the stomach.

The boy was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egelston -- where he will head into his second surgery Thursday afternoon -- following an initial five-hour surgery.

The child, identified as Brian Sosby by his grandfather, was inside an apartment unit with a 20-year-old on Confederate Court when the shooting occurred after midnight Thursday.

“They just told me that someone was playing or something,” Forest Sosby said.

Major Adam Lee III, with the Atlanta Police Department, told Channel 2's Nicole Carr that, "Right now it does appear to be an accident. There was a social gathering at the residence. A person pulled out the gun to show it to someone else and at some point, he pulled the trigger."

Police told Carr that the man they currently have in custody is a friend of the boy’s father and said he initially ran from the home with that gun after the shooting.

“He thought about it and called and turned himself in, which was the right thing to do,” Lee said.

By the afternoon, the boy’s mother said she needed time to talk with a team of doctors performing the second surgery on her son.

At this point, Brian’s story is about survival.

“We hope that he is going to survive his injuries,” Lee told Carr.

“Yes, I’m just praying,” the boy’s grandfather said.

This was just one of two accidental shootings in the city of Atlanta in just two days.
