Boom! Video shows Georgia bridge blast

GDOT blasted old bridge near Savannah.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Gone in a blink of an eye – the Georgia Department of Transportation blasted part of an old bridge near Savannah on Monday.

In a video posted on Facebook, the old substructure left over from the Savannah River Bridge on US 378/State Route 43 was blown to smithereens.

Crews said the setup for the demolition took “a while but the blast was worth it!”

The bridge was constructed in 1938 and reconstructed in 1952.

DOT said portions of the demoed material will boost recreation by creating fish havens in nearby areas identified by the Corps of Engineers.
