Police: Bookkeeper arrested for stealing $3,000 from high school

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Riverdale High School bookkeeper accused of stealing money from students could face a judge this weekend.

Police say bookkeeper Jacqueline Caldwell is suspected of keeping cash from senior fees and is charged with theft by conversion.

Police say almost $3,000 has come up unaccounted for. Police say a concerned parent brought the issue to their attention.

Channel 2's Mark Winne was the only reporter at Riverdale High School where Caldwell was taken into custody Friday afternoon.

She told Winne she didn't steal any money from the school.

He asked if she knew why she was under arrest.

"Well, I know there were some irregularities in something, but no, I didn't steal anything," Caldwell said. "I don't know what happened," she said.

Clayton County police Detective Duane Hiers says their investigation determined the bookkeeper was the last person with the bulk of the money.

Clayton County Schools Police Chief Clarence Cox says he wants to send a message - When parents pay their hard-earned money for student fees they deserve for the money to wind up helping students.

Caldwell told Winne she believes someone else took the money.

"If anybody knows my life, I don't have it," she said.

As for whether there are other suspects, investigator Hiers says the investigation is not done.
