Bond denied for alleged Publix rapist

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County judge denied a bond request for a rape suspect who supposedly followed some of his victims from Publix supermarkets.

Gary Mincey is accused of raping or attempting to rape five women in south DeKalb County in the fall of 2011.

Prosecutors said within a span of 45 days he followed women from Publix stores or area nightclubs and then held then at gun- or knifepoint and sexually assaulted them.

"He robbed them of their property at their homes in their driveways," DeKalb County Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicole Marchand told Judge Gail Flake.

Authorities say the victims range in age from 21 to 53.

According to police, one of the victims was robbed and raped inside her home and afterwards Mincey took her jewelry, laptop, camera and printer. Investigators said they later found some of the items in Mincey's home and car.

The state also says Mincey's own mother gave police items that belonged to victims 1, 3 and 5 that she found in his bedroom.

In open court, Channel 2 Action News also learned the state has DNA evidence that allegedly ties Mincey to two of the assaults.

Mincey's defense attorney told Flake his client understands the seriousness of the case and requested a $50,000 property bond.

Shortly afterwards the judge rejected that request saying Mincey is a flight risk, a serious danger to the community and if released could potentially intimidate witnesses.

"This was a huge deal to protect these women and keep this defendant in jail because he could always go back," said Marchand.

Mincey's defense expert plans to review the DNA evidence.

The case is expected to go to trial sometime in 2013.
