Woman rescued after tree crashes onto Atlanta house

ATLANTA — A large tree crashed through a woman’s home, trapping her late Tuesday night.

Channel 2’s Darryn Moore was at the scene in northwest Atlanta where crews had to cut through debris to rescue her.

The tree demolished the backside of the home on North Avenue when it fell around 10:30 p.m. Four people were in the house at the time of the crash.

“I jumped up and looked in the hallway and I saw the roof fall and I saw a big old tree and I started calling for my niece,” said resident Ollie Thomas.

Thomas said the tree smashed through the woman’s bedroom and she couldn't get out.

When Atlanta firefighters showed up, they cut several large branches and went inside to rescue her.

“She was trapped for about 15 minutes before we were able to extricate her,” said Battalion Chief Edward Hill. “Fortunate for us and for her, she came out unscathed and no injuries at all.”

Firefighters said the rain caused the tree to uproot.

“It’s just due to the weather with all the rain and the ground is very saturated and cause the tree to fall on the back portion of the house,” Hill said.

The house is now uninhabitable.

“We got to start back over again,” Thomas said.

The family said they had no homeowners insurance and they are now staying with other relatives.
