Tropical Storm Cristobal becomes 3rd named Atlantic storm of season

Tropical Storm Cristobal has officially formed in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday, becoming the third named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon says the tropical storm is currently moving SW at 3 mph with max winds at 40 mph.

Monday marked the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season, but we saw two named storms in May –Arthur and Bertha.

The most recent seasons to have two named storms before June 1, 2012 and 2016, were both very active hurricane seasons.

Cristobal becomes the earliest third Atlantic named storm on record, beating the previous record set June 5, 2016.

The NOAA forecast for this season is for 13-19 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-6 major hurricanes. A typical hurricane season produces 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
