Thieves smash through the windows of 27 cars overnight

ATLANTA — Thieves targeted nearly 30 cars in West Midtown in just one night.

One victim describes her shock to learn that thieves targeted her car -- instead of nicer ones.

Atlanta police say they got the call around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday after a resident realized that their car was broken into while parked inside of the building's gated garage.

But many residents said they didn't know the extent of the crime, because when the leasing office sent out an email around noon, it didn't give any specifics. It only said that there were "multiple break-ins."

"I'm a young professional, myself, and I'm afraid, myself,” Edward Wyatt said.

For some, their "safety concerns" extend beyond these most recent break-ins.

The victim that Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez spoke to said her apartment was also broken into over the summer.

She's only lived there since May.

"I would like to move out, personally, I don't feel safe,” a resident said.

Jaquez tracked down the president of the company that owns the complex, and he released the following statement:

"We're very frustrated that this occurred. It's certainly extraordinary to have criminal smash 27 cars in one event. We're working with the Atlanta Police Department to understand the facts of the situation and the results of their investigation. We will be reviewing our own security measures."
