Mother of teen struck by baseball: 'God's got this'

ATLANTA — The son of a former Atlanta Braves player is on life support after a baseball accident, and has already endured five surgeries.

Doctors at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite performed another surgery Tuesday on Jason Lockhart, 15.

High school baseball coach Ben Drust has been around the game long enough to know that accidents can happen the second you step on the field.

This accident started when a pitched ball got past the catcher.

A baseball hit Lockhart in the face June 17 during a tournament.

His nose was broken in the incident, and doctors later discovered a torn artery.

The 15-year old attends Hebron Christian Academy in Gwinnett County, where he's a member of the baseball team.

His injury happened 10 days ago, during a tournament in South Carolina. Jason was playing for a travelling team based in Barrow County.

His father, Keith Lockhart, played for the Braves in the late 90s, and now the entire family is by Jason's side as he has endured multiple surgeries.

Back at school, Drust says Jason is in their prayers, and so is the catcher.

"It was an accident,” Drust said. “There was no malicious intent.We're praying around our campus for that boy as well."

Drust visited Jason in the hospital Tuesday.

He didn't share the details of the visit out of respect for the family, but said: "They appreciate the prayers. They encourage the prayers. Mrs. Lockhart's exact words to Jason were, 'Jason, God's got this.'"
