Roads re-freeze following snow, winter weather across N. Georgia

ATLANTA — Road conditions are starting to decline again throughout metro Atlanta, after a day full of crashes due to snow and ice.

Georgia's Department of Transportation urged people Wednesday to stay home, off the interstates and let crews get to work. As the sunset in the evening, many roads began to ice over again.

Most metro schools canceled classes for Thursday as well.

A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect for most of north Georgia until Thursday morning.

Nearly 2 inches of snow fell in parts of metro Atlanta by Wednesday afternoon.

2:55 p.m.: Coweta County has issued a curfew because of dangerous roads, which as expected to get worse once the sun goes down. The curfew is in effect from 5 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday.

2:52 p.m.: Monroe County Schools are closed for Thursday because of the winter weather.

"After consulting with local and state emergency management officials, it has been determined that many roads are still iced over throughout the county. With low temperatures and overnight refreezing, these areas will pose a major concern for early-morning school bus and car travel tomorrow. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our primary concern," the district said.

A Wind Chill Advisory has been extended until 10 a.m. Thursday ahead of single digit wind chills Wednesday afternoon, night and Thursday morning.

12:10 p.m.: Coweta County Schools announces it will close Thursday

12:05 p.m.: Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says Atlanta Public Works crews have 17 salt spreaders throughout the city and will be treating the roads around the clock.

12:02 p.m.: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport reports 684 flight delays, 276 cancellations in an out of the airport.

12:00 p.m.: 2 people die in two-car crash on I-75 in Macon, according to WGXA.

11:44 a.m.: Clayton County police urge people to stay off the roads.

11:30 a.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said 2.3 inches of snow officially fell in Atlanta.

10:49 a.m.: Gov. Nathan Deal said that the state government will remain closed Thursday due to the winter weather:

“Our top priority is to ensure the safety of Georgians and to allow the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to continue doing its job,” said Deal. “Due to yesterday’s winter weather and continued freezing temperatures, ice continues accumulating on our roadways. GDOT is responsible for the maintenance of more than 17,900 miles of state roads and interstates. Currently, there are more than 12,800 miles remaining to be cleared and treated. In light of this, I urge people to stay home, stay safe and remain off our roadways. We will continue monitoring the weather and will provide updates as necessary.”

9:40 a.m.: Wind chill at -2 in metro Atlanta

9:38 a.m.: The City of Atlanta has opened three warming centers for those in need of a warm place to stay.

11:33 a.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz says 2.3 inches of snow fell in Atlanta.

11:00 a.m.: Atlanta police said they are working more than 90 crashes today.

9:25 a.m.: GDOT says I-75 South Metro Express Lanes are closed until further notice.

9:10 a.m.:  Gwinnett County police said they have handled more than 170 wrecks since midnight.

8:38 a.m.: Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Jake Smith tells Channel 2 Action News the department is working an estimated 50 traffic accidents.

"We really need people to stay off the roads," Smith says of authorities working the wrecks.

8:30 a.m.: Snow is almost done falling, but will remain on the ground for some time. Anywhere from 1 to 2 inches of snow has fallen across parts of metro Atlanta.

Wind will make it feel like it's in the single digits and below zero Wednesday, Minton says.

8:15 a.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton says it is 16 degrees in metro Atlanta and snow has moved through the area.

7:55 a.m.: Nearly 190 flights cancelled, 255 flights delayed in and out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

7:50 a.m.: Snowfall starting to move out of metro Atlanta as roads remain icy, dangerous.
Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said wind chills will be dangerously cold into Wednesday afternoon. 
7:30 a.m.: GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale says crews dealing with a lot of issues falling snowfall. She urges drivers to stay off the roads. She asked that people also stay off the roads for the sake of the emergency crews that need to treat the roads.
"Give crews the time and space they need to clear the accidents," she said. "If you can't safely get out of your neighborhood, it's best to stay put."

6:55 a.m.: Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for metro Atlanta and north Georgia as dangerous road conditions and snowfall continue.

6:50 a.m.: Layer of ice, then snow on most metro Atlanta roads. The roads temperatures are below freezing, in the teens and 20s.

6:30 a,m.: Snow still falling throughout most of metro Atlanta while crashes still being reported.

6:10 a.m.: More than 30 crashes reported due to widespread icing in Hall County. People asked to avoid driving.

6:03 a.m.: Crash involving MARTA bus in DeKalb County, according to Triple Team Traffic.

6:01 a.m.: Snow starting to clear in parts of north Georgia, but still falling across metro Atlanta. Road temperatures are still freezing, Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton says.

6 a.m.: Nearly 100 flights cancelled, close to 115 flights delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport due to winter weather.

5:40 a.m.: Triple Team Traffic reports several roads closed due to icy conditions. They include I-85 southbound, south of Highway 211, Langford Parkway at I-285, Browns Ridge Road, west of Ga. 400, Highway 124 at Ronald Reagan Parkway.

5:35 a.m.: MARTA rail, bus services experiencing delays

5:15 a.m.: Ground delay announced at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

5:10 a.m.: Snow is ending in the northwest GA mountains now, but will continue on the south side for the next 4-5 hours, Severe Weather Team 2 says.
