IRS scammers call IRS employee asking for money

ATLANTA — Investigators are warning parents about a phone scam that could cost them hundreds of dollars.

Scammers are calling pretending to be the IRS and demanding money for a federal student tax.

Mark Green says he got a call asking for more than $5,000.

He knows there is no such things as a federal student tax because he works for the IRS.

Scammers are armed with an incredible amount of personal details including names, addresses and personal details.

“Nor do we ever call to harass you, or to tell you that you owe a debt that you don’t owe or to have you pay it on a pre-debit card, to put it on an iTunes card or gift card or anything of that nature. We don’t operate like that,” Green said.

The best thing to do if you get a call from a scammer is to hang up.

Fake IRS calls have cost people in Georgia around $1 million so far this year.
