Residents want answers after water turned off at apartment complex

ATLANTA — Families contacted Channel 2 Action News over frustration that their water was shut off for days.

But Atlanta Watershed employees say they didn't do it.

Ciera McGinty is just one of the residents at the Brentwood Creek Apartments on Alison Court who had to go without water for days.

"There are kids. It's spring break so it was just a frantic situation, like, 'What's going on with the water?'" McGinty told Channel 2's Carl Willis.

"Everybody's water was off over here and it was really sad," resident Ke'asia Caine said.

The situation was made worse, McGinty said, by the lack of information on why water service was interrupted at a complex where water is included in the rent.

"You go to work. You come home. You expect to have what you're paying for," McGinty said.

But water service may not have been paid for, according to former property manager Germaine Story, who resigned Tuesday.

"It's kind of, more so, a mystery to me. I've never seen a property be able to operate without paying a water bill for an entire year," Story told Willis.

Service was restored Tuesday, but Story estimates the back bill to be around $486,000.

Willis called the president of the American Management Group, which manages the property. All he would say is that the water is back on.

An Atlanta Watershed Management representative told Willis they've reached out to the landlord to get on a payment plan, but say they haven't returned calls.

Atlanta Watershed also said the property has a history of problems with leaking pipes and water service mysteriously cutting off at certain times of the day.

"I think attention needs to be brought to the matter so the property management company is held accountable to keep the property up to a certain standard," Story said.

"Nobody deserves to go on without water.” McGinty said.
