Record-number of travelers expected this holiday weekend

ATLANTA — A record number of travelers are expected to be on the road and in the air this holiday.

According to Triple A, more than 100 million people will travel between Friday and just after the New Year, most of them on the road.

Six million people are expected to fly.

Some fliers were still trying to get to their destination Saturday, in time for Christmas.

Friday was the busiest day at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach said there are still some Christmas Eve travelers.

"Today is even better. It's Christmas Eve. Everyone's full of holiday cheer," traveler Justin Tate said.

Winter weather that hit earlier in the week around the country caused more than 3,000 delays nationwide, but that did not seem to be a problem Saturday morning.

Travelers are moving through the airport relatively quickly.

Security checkpoints opened earlier in the morning and TSA staffed all lanes, keeping wait times down.

TSA is also using K-9s to help speed up the screening process.

"I was told to get out early, so I'm here early. Hopefully it won't be as hectic as everyone says it's going to be," one traveler said.

There were long lines to check in for flights at the international terminal Saturday morning.

Gehlbach spoke to passengers about why they are flying out on Christmas Eve.

“We were going to fly Christmas Day, but it was just as cheap to fly today, so we’re out,” another traveler said.
