Proposed Ponce City Market expansion receives mixed reviews

ATLANTA, Ga. —
Ponce City Market is already the largest brick building in the Southeast, but now its developers are looking to expand its footprint by possibly adding more residential and office space and possibly a hotel.

A spokesman for Ponce City Market confirms they are in early talks with neighborhood groups about the possible expansion.

Under its current plan, PCM would build an additional tower on top of an existing parking deck along the Beltline. This tower could be for residential and possibly additional commercial space. That same proposal includes a hotel built on the opposite end of the property at Ponce de Leon Avenue and Glen Iris Boulevard.

Some Old Fourth Ward residents have taken to social media opposing the idea. Some believe that under the current proposal, the buildings do not fit in with the surrounding neighborhood.

But in a statement from PCM developer Jamestown's CEO Matt Bronfman, the plans are still in the very early stages.

"These additions have been contemplated since the beginning of Ponce City Market's transformation," Bronfman said in a written statement.  "Right now, we're meeting with neighbors, sharing ideas and seeking feedback to incorporate into the plan."

Elizabeth Stubbs lives in Old Fourth Ward and said she likes the idea of PCM expanding.

"I'm just happy that the area is being used, because for so long, this area through here was just sitting empty," Stubbs said.

"I think it's a great idea, because it's bringing a lot to the city," said Old Fourth Ward resident Julia McLane.

According to social media, some neighbors, however, are planning a protest across the street from PCM on Saturday.
