Police: Man punched woman, attacked sister after run in Chastain Park

ATLANTA — Police arrested a man who admitted to punching a woman in the face as she finished a run with her sister at Chastain Park.

It happened Wednesday around 10:30 p.m. on the 100 block of West Wieuca Road.

Atlanta police said the 18- and 20-year-old sisters had just finished running and were walking back to their car when one of them says Silvestre Diaz-Duque attacked her.

She said she looked back at her sister, and saw Diaz-Duque attacking her as well. She ran over to help her sister, and they struggled on the ground. They said Diaz-Duque punched the second sister in the face after she bit his hand as he was trying to cover her mouth.

The first sister ran to get help, and police say that’s when Diaz-Duque ran away.

When police arrested Diaz-Duque walking on Tuxedo Road, they say he offered a very different story. He told police the pair offered him a ride and as they were walking to the car, he put his arm around one of the sisters who got upset, so he punched her in the face, according to police.

Diaz-Duque has been charged with two counts of battery and remains in the Fulton County Jail.

Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik spoke with the suspect’s wife Thursday. She told him her husband is a father of four and she doesn’t think he’s capable of that kind of violence.

“He is very responsible. He is the only one who works in this house. I don't know why they are saying these things,” Leticia Torres said in Spanish. “Maybe he was confused with other person. People made up some stuff. If I don't see it, I don't believe it."

Diaz-Duque is expected to appear in court Friday morning.
