Police searching for gunman who shot at Lyft driver, passenger

ATLANTA — A Lyft driver told Channel 2 Action News he barely missed flying bullets after someone fired into his car and shot at his passenger.

His passenger was shot; he said he didn't know how badly he was injured but he knew he needed help. The shooting happened off Hanford Drive in southwest Atlanta Saturday night.

"A guy ran up to my window and started banging it. At that point, she tells me to "drive, drive, drive,'" the driver said.

The driver agreed to an interview with Channel 2's Liz Artz, but only over the phone.

"As I put it in drive, I heard gunshots," he said.

A witness heard the entire incident.

"As soon as the Lyft driver came by, he just opened the door and opened fire," said the witness.

The driver said he had just dropped off a female passenger when the gunman opened fire.

"The windows are blown out, the passenger gets shot," the driver said.

He gave us pictures of his car and a picture of the scene at a nearby Walmart where he frantically drove and flagged down a police officer.

"The cop said I was lucky the bullets went around me because at that point when it was happening I literally shrunk into the wheel and accelerated," he said.

His 22-year-old passenger is also thankful it wasn't worse.

"The passenger was shot in the arm or the shoulder," the driver said.

Atlanta police are still searching for the gunman. According to the report, the female passenger told investigators it was her ex-boyfriend. Detectives have not confirmed if he is a suspect.

Meanwhile, the driver told us it was so terrifying, he's not even able to open his door.

"It's a pretty crazy ordeal. You know, every time I think about this, it brings flashbacks of the incident," the driver said.

The driver told Artz he's still waiting on the Lyft insurance adjuster to examine his car. He said Lyft is his second job, but he can't get to either job without his car.
