Police search for leads in deadly mistaken-identity shooting

ATLANTA — Police are searching for new leads after a woman was killed while dropping her co-worker off at home.

Shanna Smith, 24, was killed last August along Hadlock Street in southwest Atlanta.

She worked at an Amazon warehouse and had just dropped off her co-worker who needed a ride when a group of armed suspects opened fire on her BMW.

"It shows what kind of world we are living in. No one is safe," neighbor James Miller said.

Police said it was a case of mistaken identity.

"It was retaliation and these young men tried to even the score and unfortunately they got the wrong person," Atlanta police Maj. Adam Lee said.

Detectives quickly arrested three men after the shooting. A fourth suspect, Matthew Larkins, is still on the run.

Police hope releasing new images of the suspect will help them find him.

"She was doing a favor for someone. It's a tragedy," Miller said.

The victim's son now lives with his grandmother in the Bahamas.
