Police renew effort to find alleged rapist

ATLANTA — Police are renewing their search for a suspected rapist. He's accused of sexually assaulting and beating a woman on a high school football field two years ago.

Detectives believe he may be still in the metro area.

Investigators said Tovoris Gordon has family in Atlanta so he may be close by.

Some people exercising on the Washington High School track around the football field were surprised to hear a woman had been sexually assaulted and beaten there.

People at the nearby library were also shocked.

Detectives say Gordon dragged a woman to a building on the football field, assaulted and beat her, then took her phone and ran.

Officers say they found a condom and condom wrapper in a tire on the field and sent it for testing.

They say it matched Gordon's DNA, which was filed in an FBI database.

“He had been previously arrested for another offense in another state and that's how we were able to identify him as our suspect,” Atlanta police detective Ronald Sluss told Channel 2’s Tom Jones.

Charlene James believes the attacker is very familiar with the neighborhood.

“He knew exactly where to drag her and he knew where to run to,” James told Jones.

Police believe Gordon is still in the area.

“Well, I hope they catch (him) and I'm pretty sure he's still out here,” James said.

Police said Gordon stole the victim's cellphone and they tracked him and were about to capture him until the phone died.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
