Off-duty officer involved in shooting in SE Atlanta, police say

ATLANTA — The GBI is investigating a shooting involving an off-duty Fulton County police officer.

Police were working three different crime scenes Wednesday afternoon.

Channel 2's Richard Elliot was on the scene as police worked to put together what happened.

It all started around 11 a.m. when an off-duty officer responded to a theft at the T-Mobile phone store on Mt. Zion Parkway in Morrow.

The officer followed in his personal vehicle as the subject drove away.

The GBI said the officer followed the subject into Atlanta while reporting the incident to 911.

"One of them got out and started shooting. When he started shooting, I got in the house," witness Harold Blackwell said.

The subject was shot, but continued driving.

"All the time, the guy in the gray car was trying to get away," witness James Johnson said.

The Atlanta Police Department got involved and the subject was stopped in the 1700 block of Lakewood Avenue. The subject was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The off-duty officer sustained minor injuries.
