ATLANTA — A man and an elderly woman are dead after a knife-fight inside a northwest Atlanta home.

The medical examiner identified one of the victims as 89-year-old Sallie Stokes.

Family members believe an intruder forced his way in Stokes’ home and she went for a knife to protect herself.

The retired school teacher’s neighbor of 50 years says she was cautious and street smart.

“(I would) knock on the door and let her know who I am before she opened it,” Guy Broughton said.

Police say the man found dead in the bathroom of the home had also been stabbed.

Investigators are trying to verify the man’s identity through fingerprints, and track down his relatives to notify them.

Stokes’ son thinks she fatally injured the intruder before she died.

Detectives said they found a knife in the home that they believe is the weapon.
