Officer-involved shooting at gas station

ATLANTA — A suspect is dead in an officer-involved shooting in southwest Atlanta Tuesday night.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. on Whitehall Street.

Atlanta police confirmed they called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to come in and investigate the incident.

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said the shooting began as a slider crime. The officer was pumping gas at a Shell station at McDaniel Street and Whitehall Street when the suspect jumped into the driver's seat of the officer's unmarked car, GBI confirmed.

Police said the officer confronted the suspect before he opened fire. The suspect took off before crashing the officer's car into two other parked cars.

The suspect was found dead inside. Police told Channel 2's Michael Seiden that at this point, there is no indication that the suspect was armed.

APD said the officer was not seriously injured. He has been with the Atlanta Police Department since 2010 and is assigned to the Executive Protection Unit.
