Police chase ends in serious crash in southeast Atlanta

ATLANTA — Two people are in serious condition after a police chase and crash in Atlanta on Thursday.

Georgia State Patrol said a chase started on Interstate 20 around 9:30 a.m. after an officer pulled over a driver for having invalid tags.

Authorities said they aren't sure why the driver sped away.

“We’re still looking for the identification for the driver and finding out what the reason was that they did flee,” GSP Sgt. Stephanie Stallings said.

The driver crashed into an SUV at Memorial Drive and Maynard Terrace.

“Next thing you know the other car bounced up around the pole and you heard a loud boom,” witness Giselle Speer said.

Police said the people inside the car have serious injuries.

“They might be paralyzed because they were pinned in the car pretty badly and they had to cut them out,” Speer said.

The driver of the SUV that was hit has minor injuries.

The crash was captured on surveillance video.

“Something like that, it had to be at least 75 to 50 miles an hour,” neighbor Sonny Oliver said.

The people in the car likely face multiple charges.
