Captain Breylan Hicks says what happened to him last summer is a blur.

"What I remember about that day is getting on my motorcycle, zipping up my safety gear, putting my helmet on and putting my gloves on,” Hicks said.

He crashed his bike in Fayetteville and lost a leg.

"It was live changing, but at the same time, as a wife, you just do what you've got to do,” Hicks' wife Valerie said.

Hicks is on the road to recovery, and the one thing he wanted to do most since the day he was nearly killed was to thank the medics who helped him.

The meeting happened at Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center.

"We don't get to follow up with a lot of patients because we're so busy. Getting to follow up with Captain Hicks was very special,” flight nurse Andrew Liles said.

Hicks is usually on the receiving end of a thank you, but this time he gave it.

"I keep looking at them right now.  I want them to be in the interview with me, because all the EMS people that saved my life -- I really appreciate it."

Hicks will be fitted with a prosthetic leg next month.  He says he can’t wait to get back to work.
