Not everyone is happy with plans to widen a major North Fulton County road

The city is planning big changes to South Atlanta Street in Roswell.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Transportation officials say reversible lanes on a north Fulton County road are leading to dozens of major crashes.

The lanes on South Atlanta Street in Roswell change directions in the morning and afternoon.

The confusion has led to wrecks, and many neighbors want it fixed.

"We have over 200 accidents a year," said Rob Dell-Ross, with the City of Roswell Transportation Department.

The City of Roswell has a plan to fix the situation, but not everyone is happy with the solution.

The city plans to widen the road to two lanes in both directions with connecting sidewalks and roundabouts.

A church along the road says the plan will cause it to lose critically important access to the front of the church and parking areas that are used during regular services as well as marriages and funerals.

The city says it will do its best to lessen the impact on dozens of affected properties.

“It is through the heart of city's historic district. It's extremely difficult and the reason why we've been working on it for 9 years,” Dell-Ross said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has set aside $11 million for the right of way acquisition. Once that's done, the project will begin and take several years to complete.
