Videos, photos show semis leaving path of destruction through neighborhood

ATLANTA — People in a metro neighborhood say they are tired of tractor-trailers cutting through their neighborhood, causing destruction.

Home surveillance captured video of trucks plowing down stop signs and narrowly missing some of the homes. Monday morning showed the latest example of a big rig in the southeast Atlanta neighborhood.

"I heard a huge crash this morning," Christina Shiels said.

Shiels woke up and saw the stop sign in front of her home on Weatherby Street destroyed. The truck seen in her camera around 6:30 a.m. is the same one seen just minutes earlier taking out part of a homeowner's fence and also another stop sign.

"It's going to be us as the taxpayers ultimately that are paying for it, instead of them getting fined," Shiels said.

Another neighbor shared pictures of a different semitrailer narrowly missing his house on Wylie Street while making a turn.

Shiels said this isn't the first time she's called in a damaged stop sign.

"This will be at least the third time that we have called to get the stop sign replaced," Shiels said.

Channel 2's Matt Johnson reached out to the city of Atlanta and a spokesperson is urging residents to, in the future, call 911 as well.

Neighbors hope more awareness leads to fewer unwanted visitors.

"Because they’re not really getting caught, they’re not getting fined, they’re not having to pay for the destruction that they do in any way shape or form," Shiels said.

Within the past couple of weeks, the city has addressed traffic on one of the narrow streets by installing "No Parking" signs to clear up congestion.

Tyson Foods, the company that owns one of the trucks, sent the following statement:

"We were both surprised and extremely disappointed when the video of one of our trucks in an Atlanta neighborhood was brought to our attention. The behavior shown does not reflect the values of Tyson Foods or the more than 121,000 team members who help feed the world. We’ll evaluate the scene and will pay for damages that are a direct result of this incident."
