Neighbors feel trapped by train that constantly stops on tracks

ATLANTA — People in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood said they are fed up with a train that often blocks their neighborhood for hours at a time.

They said the problem has been going on near Fairfield Place for years and they often feel trapped.

"I feel trapped because I'm scared to walk over the train and it's too hot to walk all the way around," neighbor Danielle Riley said.

Channel 2's Justin Wilfon saw some people crawling through the stopped train to get in and out of the neighborhood.

"One time I was climbing over it and it started to move as I was climbing over," area resident Virgil Hodges said.

There is another way out of the neighborhood, but it's a much longer route back to MLK Drive.

"You've got to detour all the way around and then you run into traffic," one resident said.

A CSX spokesperson told Wilfon that the train stops for a number of reasons related to a nearby rail yard.

"CSX will closely look at our operations in this area to understand what can be done to improve the situation for this neighborhood," the company said in a statement.
