Music Midtown, soccer, football highlight busy weekend in Atlanta

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are getting ready to cover several big events happening this weekend.

Music Midtown will be taking place at Piedmont Park, with headliners Bruno Mars and Mumford and Sons. Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach visited the park Friday as crews started to set up for the music festival.

There is an Atlanta United game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Saturday.

An expected record Major League Soccer crowd will see Atlanta United take on Orlando City.

The Falcons will play the Green Bay Packers in their first regular-season game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Sunday. More than 70,000 people are expected for that game.

TRENDING STORIES:

Gehlbach learned anyone who lives in the city, or is just here for the weekend and looking for information, should call the non-emergency 311 number.

“We can get you the answer and if we don’t have an answer, we can get you to the right place,” said Janice Quintana, the director of 311.

Quintanta said the call center will stay open for the first time over a weekend, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

“(We are open) if they need to call us about anything that they could not have called us about during the week because a lot of people didn’t have their power and additionally we have a lot of activities going on this week,” she said.

Atlanta police will have extra staff to get people safely to and from the games and Music Midtown. Police urge everyone to use MARTA this weekend.

“We’re very mindful of what’s occurring on the global scale. That is being provided to our officers. We also have a team that’s responsible for monitoring any potential terrorist threat,” Atlanta police Maj. Darin Schierbaum said.

Fans feel they will be protected, even in large crowds.

“It’s all about coming together and music and everything, so just looking for a good event,” one fan said.

With the new stadium comes new traffic patterns and ways to get around. Many of the same parking and tailgating areas around Mercedes-Benz Stadium remain from the Georgia Dome. There will be fan fests at the Georgia World Congress Center before each game.
