Middle school student dies after becoming unresponsive at school

ATLANTA — A student died Tuesday after becoming unresponsive at an Atlanta middle school.

Officials say the incident happened at Harper-Archer Middle School in northwest Atlanta.

Atlanta Public Schools says the student, whose name is not yet released, was taken to a nearby hospital. In a statement, the school district said, in part, “The student passed away at the hospital yesterday evening. Our condolences go out to the family, as well as the students and staff."

APS would not detail what led up to the incident.

Police would only confirm they responded to the school for a medical call. They are not saying if they are investigating.

“I am so sorry for the mother because I feel her pain. I feel her pain,” said parent Stephanie Williams, breaking down in tears.

Williams said she had just been on a field trip with the student who died and was shocked by the news.

Many parents at the school say they have a lot of questions about what caused the student’s death.

Parents say they want to know more.

“I just don't want the same thing to happen to my child, because how could you not notice if a child was sick? What happened? I just don't know anything,” Williams said.

APS officials say grief counselors will remain at the school for as long as they’re needed.
