Masked gunmen ambush pair changing tire in Midtown

ATLANTA — Police are investigating a shooting during an armed robbery in Midtown.

Police said two people were on their way home when they got a flat tire on Rock Springs Road early Wednesday morning.

A black SUV pulled up, and four men wearing masks jumped out and robbed them, according to officers.

Authorities said the robbers took their things, and when one of the victims resisted, the person was shot in the stomach.

Channel 2's Richard Elliot spoke with Evelyn Johnson, who lives on the street where the incident happened.

"So what in the world could be going on at 3 a.m. on our little street?" she asked as she recounted what went through her mind as the events unfolded.

The gunfire woke up Swanson’s husband, but he was too afraid to go outside.

"So, he didn’t want to venture to see what was going on, you know? You just don’t know if, especially in light of the whole Las Vegas shooting thing, you know, you have to be very protective of yourself, unfortunately," she said.

APD thinks there’s a good possibility the four are part of a robbery crew operating in the area and that they were cruising around looking for someone to rob.

"It’s actually under investigation. We’re looking at all possibilities to determine if we can identify these suspects and link them to other crimes," said Donald Hannah with the Atlanta Police Department.

The robbers took off and none have been arrested, police said.

The shooting victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.
