Man shot near The Mall West End; gunman on the loose

ATLANTA — Police are looking for a gunman after a man was shot near a mall in Atlanta.

The shooting was reported Monday at the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. and Lee Street near The Mall West End.

Police told Channel 2 Action News that the gunman fled the scene.

The man was shot in the leg and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is stable.

"There were a lot of people on the street, people running, people panicking when they heard the shots,” witness Howard Smith said.

The mid-day shooting on the street near West End Mall triggered chaos, sending people running for cover.

'He pulled out of a gun and shot him in the leg,” witness Kelan Freeman said,

"This ever happen before?" Channel 2's Tom Regan asked.

“All the time," Freeman said.

Security camera video shows the victim standing in front of a shop with a car parked in front of him. Someone gets out of the car and opens fire. Video then shows the victim falling to ground and bystanders running.

Witnesses said they heard four or five gunshots.

This year there's been at least two other shootings in this busy west end shopping area .. and people have had enough.

Just two weeks earlier, three people were shot outside The Mall West End, according to police.

Police told Channel 2's Lori Wilson it started inside the mall with a drug-related transaction. Witnesses told police the people involved identified themselves as rival gang members.
