Man says stranger with gun threatened him on MARTA train

ATLANTA — A man said a stranger with a gun threatened him on a MARTA train.

Joseph Donald said he got on the train at the Medical Center station after leaving from his cancer treatment at Northside Hospital last week.

Details of the alleged confrontation on Channel 2 Action News This Morning.

He said he sat behind a man who immediately started arguing with him, apparently questioning why Donald was breathing in his direction.

“I’m, like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on in your world today,’” Donald said.

The conversation escalated and Donald said the man pulled a pistol out of his book bag.

“You’ve got people picking up their kids, running this way. You’ve got people picking up their kids running that way,” he said.

Donald said the man told him he was going to shoot when once they got off at the Buckhead station. Once the train stopped, Donald said he saw a MARTA officer and shouted for help.

He said the officer didn’t believe him at first.

“I said, ‘I’m not closing this door until someone comes over and sees what’s going on with this situation,’” Donald said.

The officer came to inspect the situation and Donald said the man passed his gun to a friend and took off running.

The officer chased him while Donald chased the friend who now had the gun. The two men got away.

“(I want) to get this guy up off these streets because he’s still riding MARTA. He’s still carrying a pistol,” Donald said.

He said both men were wearing uniforms from a local steakhouse, and he hopes that will help police find them.

Donald said even though the men are still out there, he’ll continue to use MARTA to get to work and his chemo treatments.
