Standoff ends in southwest Atlanta; 1 arrested, 1 dead

ATLANTA — A man is in police custody after a standoff lasting more than four hours in southwest Atlanta on Polar Rock Road. Police say one man has been killed in connection with the standoff.

The threat that had neighbors worrying for their own safety, on Channel 2 Action News Sunday AM. 

The family of the gunman involved in the standoff and the victim's family say the gunman killed his sister's, boyfriend Rod Benton, 34.

Police say the gunman was threatening to hurt himself, leading to the standoff.

Neighbors in the area were ordered to stay in their homes.

One neighbor spoke with Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes through a screen door.

"It kind of worries me a bit because there's children that play around here and this is a park, like a family environment," the neighbor said.

A woman who identified herself to Fernandes as the gunman's mother said she would have been able to talk some sense into her son, but police wouldn't let her near the scene.
