Jail time could be a thing of the past for small amounts of marijuana

ATLANTA — Atlanta leaders are considering changing laws when it comes to minor offenses.

They are deciding if they should do away with jail time for possession of small amounts of marijuana and drinking in public.

Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall has proposed legislation to repeal various sections of the city of Atlanta Code of Ordinances that appear to be outdated.

The work session will provide the Atlanta City Council with an opportunity to hear from and exchange perspectives with a variety of partners, including representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the Atlanta Police Department, the city courts and the City Law Department, among others.

Members of the public are also invited to share their thoughts during the public comment period of the meeting.
