It may be harder to find a critical vaccine for international travel

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A vaccine required before traveling to certain countries is about to run out in the United States.

Yellow fever is carried by mosquitos. While not a threat in the U.S., it is in many countries people travel to.

The problem is the only manufacturer of the vaccine in this country is undergoing renovations and the supply is almost gone before that work is completed.

Channel 2's Carol Sbarge learned there were more than 100 locations in Georgia to get this vaccine --now there are just six.

That's why the DeKalb County Board of Health was glad to be chosen as one of the locations in Georgia that'll be able to temporarily use a vaccine imported from Europe.

“In any given year, we distributed about 750 doses so to not have been able to do that, that would have been a big issue,” said Dr. Sandra Elizabeth Ford.

The Vinson Health Center Travel Clinic on Winn Way will carry the Stamaril vaccine.

“We're hoping by 2018 that the plant is completely renovated and they'll be able to start manufacturing yellow fever vaccine for 2018,” Ford said.

Yellow fever can be deadly. In places with the disease, it is required you must have documentation that you got the vaccine before you can enter those countries.

The DeKalb County Board of Health said it is good to call ahead to be screened because there are some restrictions on who can't get it.

"For example, babies under 9 months old and adults over 60 can't get it,” Ford said.
