How to avoid scams when donating to Harvey relief efforts

ATLANTA — You may be anxious to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey, but watch out for scams.

Channel 2's Craig Lucie spoke to consumer advisor Clark Howard about the best way to avoid a scam.

“Do not give into any phone call because people may not be who they say they are,” Howard said.

Howard said the best way to give is to stick with the reliable charities and if you want to help a local charity in Texas, there’s a way.

“United Way in Houston has organizations on ground with local knowledge and focus,” he explained.

Lucie also sat down with Noula Zaharis, the director of the Charities and Securities Division for the Georgia secretary of state.

She said those most at risk following major disasters are seniors taking phone calls.

Her advice is like Howard’s, give to the reputable charities with clean backgrounds.

“Charity Navigator, The Wise Giving Alliance, Guidestar, those groups will tell you who's raising money and for what,” she said.

Scammers are appealing to your emotions and will try to get your financial information over the phone.

Again, Howard and Zaharis stress never do it.
