High security in place for Falcons playoff game

ATLANTA — Several hundred state, local and federal police will help provide security around the Georgia Dome and Georgia World Congress Center for the NFC playoff game Saturday between the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks.

"We really have our hands full, but we are prepared," said Atlanta Police Sgt. Warren Pickard.

In addition to the playoff game, the Atlanta Boat Show is underway at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Officials estimate the two events will draw over ninety thousand people to the downtown area.

"We have our partners who are going to be assisting us, the World Congress Center Police, Georgia State, Georgia Tech Police and any other police in that area are going to be available as a resource, as well as our federal partners,"  Pickard said.

Security plans may include deploying large trucks to protect public spaces from intrusion by vehicles intending harm.

"Because of the climate around the world, we have introduced some new tactics. We will employ our public resources, such as public works that can really impede, and be an obstacle for that to happen," Pickard said.

Atlanta police and the Atlanta Falcons are urging fans to be cautious of counterfeit game tickets. City law prohibits ticket reselling within 2,700 feet of a sports or entertainment venue.

Georgia Dome officials said standard security and entrance screening measures will be in place.

"We don't allow any bags inside the stadium unless they are clear and you can see through them," Georgia Dome Spokesman Jason Kirksey said.

The 4:30 p.m. playoff game is sold out. Dome officials advise those attending the game to arrive early to avoid long lines at security checkpoints. Atlanta Police said parking will be a challenge, and urge those coming to the game to use public transit or ride sharing services.
