Growing sinkhole may cause traffic mess as kids head back to school

ATLANTA — Residents in Northwest Atlanta are concerned about a growing sinkhole in their neighborhood.

They say the city is not working fast enough on West Wesley Road and fear it will become a traffic nightmare when school begins in a few weeks.

They showed Channel 2's Liz Artz exactly where the problem was and claim they have not seen efforts to make repairs.

People in the neighborhood said that for weeks, the sinkhole has only been getting bigger and bigger and that all the city has done is bring out more barricades.

“They put several (barricades) here about three weeks ago,” a resident said. “Last week, they put all these other barriers, (but) no one has been working. What are the barriers for?”

Onlookers said the distance of the barricades has expanded, whixh doesn't seem to be good news, so they hope that it gets contained -- and quickly.

“This street has been closed for a week,” a neighbor told Artz. “Not one person has been out here working on anything. What’s the problem?”

Darvin Ham lives in the neighborhood and told Artz that he has confidence in city officials, but also has traffic concerns for the start of the school year.

“With school about to open up, this could be (a) headache not just (for the) foundation of houses, (but) traffic, kids, (going) to and from work at a respectable time,” Ham said.

Residents who live on the road fear the sinkhole is becoming dangerous and believe it might compromise their properties.

They told Artz that one wrong step could get someone hurt.

City officials sent Artz a response to neighbors’ concerns:

"The immediate area has been barricaded and closed to avoid further collapse. At this time, both general and local traffic is prohibited. The city advises motorist to follow all posted signage."
