Body of Fox Theatre organist goes unclaimed three weeks after death

ATLANTA — The Fox Theatre's world renowned organist in residence died nearly three weeks ago, but his body remains unclaimed.

Larry Douglas Embury entertained audiences at the Fox Theatre for nearly two decades. His death came as a shock to friends who say he deserved better than what happened since.

"He's a prodigy. He's a genius, he's traveled the world," Laura Shore said.

Shore says it's appalling that her friend Embury has been lying at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office for three weeks.

"The thought of him being cold in a drawer is just gut-wrenching," Shore said.

So Shore and her fiance started a GoFundMe drive to cover cremation and other costs.

Channel 2 Action News spoke with Embury in 2012 about the job he often called, "the greatest gig on earth,"

"This is like going to church on Sunday. They have their season tickets and they're in the pew in their same seats. I know their songs. I'll turn around and play and hear them screaming from the balcony, 'Larry Douglas, we're here tonight,' and I'll know who it is," Embury said.

Embury's friend says he has no family in Georgia. The medical examiner's officer says it's notified next of kin out of state, but wouldn't share more than that.
