ATLANTA — Some residents have been able to go back to their homes, but the concern remains as a crew works to patch up the leak after a construction crew hit a gas line.
This is hours after Channel 2's Carl Willis watched a crew drill to get to a cut gas line, as vapors leaked into the air.
Atlanta Fire tells Willis a construction crew accidentally hit a gas line on Woodward Avenue this afternoon, forcing homeowners like Conrad Brown to evacuate due to high gas readings.
"It's my first day living here so it's kind of frustrating I just want to go home," Brown said.
Willie Rios lives right at Woodward and Berean avenues and says he got an urgent knock on the door.
An emergency responder was telling him to get to safety, but not everyone in his house is mobile.
"My roommate's wife is crippled, she can't get out of bed," Rios said. "The gas effects of my animals, my cats my dogs."
He sheltered in place for a while, but then he couldn't get back home once he stepped away from the home.
"It's inconvenient at this time, everyone's coming home from work," Rios said.
In total, 15 homes had to be evacuated and no clear sign Monday night when the threat would be clear.
"I still don't know if I'm allowed to go inside my own house," Brown said.
Willis asked Atlanta Gas Light for a timeline and they told Willis they can't give an estimate but say they're working as fast as they can while maintaining safety.
