Crews rescue 2 people trapped in car by fallen tree

ATLANTA — Atlanta Fire crews rescued two people trapped in a car when a tree came crashing down on Thursday afternoon.

The tree took down power lines before landing on top of the moving car at Chappell Road and Blyss Avenue in northwest Atlanta.

Georgia Power crews had to cut power to the wires before firefighters could get to the victims.

Jacquelyn Upkins and her brother were trapped inside for more than two hours. They were both “alert and conscious” the entire time, authorities said.

"They didn't have any time to react," witness Timothy Jackson said.

Upkins was able to walk away from the car without a scratch, but her brother was taken to the hospital.

"It just hit hard. It just hit my side of the car, but it hit his side of the car real bad,” she said. Upkins was able to walk away from the car without a scratch, but her brother was taken to the hospital.

Upkins said she was not sure how her brother was doing.

“They're probably just thankful for their lives. It could have been worse. They could have been dead. The way it fell, it could have crushed the car even more,” said witness Timothy Jackson.

Georgia Power crews are now working to replace the downed poles and get power turned back on in the area.
