Atlanta City Council vote to drop PARKatlanta put on hold

ATLANTA — Atlanta City Council has voted to give itself more time to work on a plan to replace the vendor that runs the city’s parking meter program.

This comes after complaints about PARKatlanta from residents, visitors, and some small business owners.

Critics have accused PARKatlanta of being too aggressive by sometimes ticketing cars before the time on the meter runs out.

"Both residents and small business owners expressed to me the predatory nature of what PARKAtlanta has done to this city,” state Senator Vincent Fort said during a meeting Monday.

The city has worked up a new agreement with vendor SP Plus Municipal Services, which officials say will allow drivers to use a Smartphone app to alert them when the parking meter is about to run out.

City Council sent the deal with SP Plus back to the city’s transportation committee to work out a few more details ahead of a final vote.

PARKatlanta has monitored 2,400 meters in the city since 2009.
