Cancellations leave passengers stranded at airport for days

ATLANTA — Frustrated passengers are anxious to get home after severe weather caused numerous cancelations at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Channel 2's Chris Jose met a group of students from Canada flying from Guatemala that has been stranded since Wednesday.

They finally found a hotel Friday in Fayetteville that was able to accommodate their large group.

The group only had their carry on bags and had been in the same clothes since Wednesday. They stopped at a store Friday to get new clothes.

"Needed to get their change of underwear, t-shirts and a little bit of different clothing," the group's teacher, Martin Race, said. "We didn't have access to our luggage, so whatever we've had on our carry on is what we've got."

Passengers said tensions are high at the airport because of the issues.

"People pushing each other to get in. People are yelling. People are angry. There's people sleeping right on the side," Griffin Duguay said.

Meanwhile, bags are piling up at baggage claim after cancellations separated passengers from their luggage.

"Wish we had more information. That's what has made it frustrating. I wish we were told we won't be able to get out until Saturday morning. That wold have made this a lot better," Race said.

The students from Canada have an 8:30 a.m. flight on Saturday, and plan on getting to the airport early in case there are more delays.

Delta said it has canceled around 3,000 flights this week and the ripple effect is causing flight-crew issues.
